9 out of 12 Leading Smartphone Brands are from China

As per a semiconductor market research firm IC Insights, nine out of twelve leading smartphone brands are headquartered in China. As per the 2018 IC Market Drivers Report, Apple and Samsung are still the market leaders for premium smartphones but Chinese companies are gaining momentum.

Samsung and Apple shipped 530 million smartphones in 2017 combined and controlled the 36% of the market share.

Even though the two smartphone makers are still in the lead, they saw little growth. The Chinese makers Huawei, OPPO, Vivo, and Xiaomi, are in the third, fourth, fifth, and sixth spot respectively. At the 7th spot we have LG from South Korea and then there is a list of smartphone brands from China Lenovo, ZTE, TCL, Gionee, LeEco at the 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th, 12th position respectively.

OPPO and Vivo’s combined shipments fell short of Apple’s smartphone shipments by just 2.7 million units. Overall the Chinese companies shipped 626 million smartphones in 2017. They saw an increase of 11% in smartphone shipments compared to 2016. Furthermore, the Chinese companies dominated 42% of the global smartphone market.

As per the market research firm Newzoo, India is one of the leading Chinese smartphone markets. There is an ever-increasing demand for Chinese phones in India. The sales of Chinese devices increased by 225% in the period between 2016 and 2017.

Though the global shipment of Chinese phones is increasing, the domestic shipment has gone down. As there is huge competition in the market, the local shipment has declined. But it can be seen that the Chinese smartphone brands are giving tough competition to the smartphone market leaders, Apple and Samsung.
