Apple loses its number 2 among smartphone manufacturers

In the run-up to the recent launch of the new iPhone 16, sales of Apple smartphones naturally declined. This meant that Xiaomi was briefly able to rise to second place among smartphone manufacturers. Xiaomi

The calm before the iPhone storm

The effect is likely to be short-lived, but it should still have a positive impact on Xiaomi’s self-confidence. Because customers preferred to wait for the launch of the iPhone 16 and its sister models in August, Apple’s sales figures recently fell quite a bit, reported the market research company CounterPoint Research.

The market researchers’ diagrams also show an effect that has been occurring again and again in recent years: just before the launch of the new iPhone models, Apple’s sales figures fall to their annual low. In the last two years, however, the consequences were not as drastic as in 2024.

Although Apple’s curve also approached that of Xiaomi in 2022 and 2023 shortly before the market launch of the latest iPhone models, it was only now that the Chinese manufacturer was able to leave Apple behind once again, at least for a short time.

In terms of unit sales, Samsung was able to maintain its leading position, but this is likely to change again later in the year. As a result of the new iPhone 16 series, Apple’s sales figures will now increase extremely sharply and should ensure that the US company’s market share roughly doubles by October 2024 at the latest.

The situation will probably not shift in Samsung’s favor again until early 2025 with the launch of the Galaxy S25 series. Meanwhile, Xiaomi is likely to continue to maintain its temporary second place and secure third place among the world’s largest smartphone manufacturers in terms of unit sales without any major leaps.
