According to a report by the Specops Software research team, over a billion passwords were stolen by malware in 2024 alone. The “2025 Breached Password Report” dives deep into the staggering amount of compromised login credentials collected over the past year. The findings highlight an urgent need for change, as passwords continue to leave users exposed despite the availability of more secure alternatives.
Darren James, Senior Product Manager at Specops Software, emphasized the growing risk, stating, “Even the strongest password policy does not protect against malware that steals passwords.” Shockingly, the analysis revealed that over 350 million of the stolen passwords were longer than ten characters, with 92 million reaching twelve characters or more.
Most of these passwords were stolen by malware such as Redline, Vidar, and Raccoon—tools that are both easily accessible to attackers and profitable on the black market. The problem is made worse by password reuse, which allows hackers to leverage stolen data to compromise multiple accounts.

To combat these risks, researchers strongly recommend using password managers. These tools help users assess the security of their current passwords and generate unique, random credentials for each account. If you’re still reusing or relying on weak passwords, now is the time to replace them with stronger, more secure options.
