Google’s Song Search Tool Might Soon Get a History Feature

Smartphones have made a lot of everyday problems vanish. Need directions? Google Maps has you covered. Can’t figure out the name of that song stuck in your head? No worries — Google’s song search tool in its Android app is already a lifesaver. And now, it looks like this feature could become even better.
Currently, Google’s sound search tool is a one-and-done experience. It listens to your audio input, analyzes it, and provides you with a list of possible matches. Once you’re done, though, it doesn’t hold onto that info — every new search is like starting over. But based on some development work spotted in the latest 16.5.33.sa.arm64 beta build of the Google app, that might be about to change.
Through an APK teardown (a method of predicting upcoming features by analyzing in-progress code), we’ve uncovered hints that Google might be working on a history feature for song searches. While APK teardowns don’t guarantee these features will make it to public release, the findings are promising. Some relevant text strings suggest that users may soon see a “Recent song searches” history.
Right now, the feature seems to be in its early stages. When testing the beta build, we managed to find a screen with the appropriate title, “Recent song searches,” but it was mostly empty and lacked any real functionality. However, there’s already a clear path for how this might look. Google could follow the design of its Now Playing history, showing basic song details, album art, and timestamps for each search.
A subtle history icon has even been spotted in the top-right corner of the search screen. Clicking on it leads to the placeholder “Recent song searches” view, though for now, that’s as far as it goes. This early glimpse is a strong indicator that Google is working on something more robust.
While it’s still in development, this potential feature is exciting. A search history for Google’s song tool would be a welcome addition, offering a more seamless and user-friendly experience. Keep an eye out — we may see further updates as this progresses toward a full release.
