Apple Introduces Purchase Migration Between Apple Accounts

Apple has announced a new feature allowing users to transfer purchases between Apple Accounts, a significant change from their previous non-transferable policy. A recently published support document explains how users can consolidate their purchases, making account management more seamless.
If you have an Apple Account dedicated solely to purchases, you can now migrate those purchases to another account. This includes apps, music, movies, TV shows, books, and even subscriptions. Once migrated, the content will be available to download on the primary account. However, iCloud data will not be included, as it isn’t tied to purchases.
It’s important to note that migrating content from a secondary Apple Account will replace specific content on the primary account:
- Apple Music: The music library data, personalization profile, social profile, and Apple Music Replay from the secondary account will overwrite the corresponding data on the primary account. However, if you already have a music library on your primary account, it will remain unaffected.
- Apple TV: The secondary account’s “Up Next” queue will replace the primary account’s queue in the Apple TV app.
- Apple Podcasts: Podcast library data from the secondary account will overwrite the podcast library data on the primary account.
Restrictions and Limitations
While this feature offers added flexibility, there are some important restrictions to keep in mind:
- This feature isn’t available in the European Union, United Kingdom, or India.
- Neither account can be a child account created through Family Sharing.
- Accounts that have already been used for migrated purchases cannot migrate again for at least a year, even if the migration is undone.
- If both accounts have associated music library data, migration isn’t possible.
- Accounts enrolled in Apple One providing iCloud storage to a third account, or those with special access through programs like VPP, cannot migrate purchases.
- Primary accounts without prior purchases or downloads are ineligible.
- Deleted, deactivated, locked, or disabled Apple Accounts are not eligible for migration.
What You Need to Know
This new feature is an excellent option for users managing multiple Apple Accounts and looking to streamline their purchases. However, its adoption may be limited due to the various restrictions and regional unavailability.
