Netflix makes account sharing more difficult: new email requirement for profiles begins

Strict account separation, more security and targeted advertising: Netflix is massively restructuring the login process for families and shared apartments. In the future, a simple password will no longer be sufficient to access a secondary profile.
New login concept for streaming
Netflix has tightened its requirements for user profiles. Since June 15, 2026, the streaming provider has required a separate email address for each profile within a subscription. Child profiles are excluded. The company is moving away from the model in which a household gets by with a single login. Users usually notice the change immediately when they start the app on their television. If you want to access another profile, you will be asked to enter a separate address. For some, the step can still be skipped, but the rollout continues.
This particularly affects shared apartments and families who frequently switch between different accounts on a shared device.
Security and technical background
How IT Boltwise reported, the technical core of the change lies in the authentication layer. This gives users more control over their personal preferences. Language, audio and display can be configured independently of the main account. In addition, registration on new devices should be made easier, as each profile owner has their own access data. Netflix introduced user profiles in August 2013. The goal at the time was to better tailor the recommendation algorithms within a household to the individual viewer. For years, the company tolerated global account sharing. It was not until May 2023 that the company began charging additional fees for non-resident users. The current innovation continues this more restrictive line.
Implications for data protection
In addition to security and the separation of users, the change also has consequences for data protection. A clear assignment should make unauthorized access more quickly identifiable. At the same time, Netflix links each profile with an email address and thus gains additional identification features. According to the provider’s current guidelines, this data may be passed on to various marketing partners. In practice, this expands the possibilities for targeted advertising and more precise user tracking. The trend towards individualization is also increasing among the competition. Platforms like Disney+ or Amazon Prime Video also rely on concepts that tie profiles to personalized registration processes. For developers, this means more precise control of access rights.
