GTA 6 codes are region-specific and even have an expiration date in Japan

In the future or initially, physical GTA 6 cases will only contain a download code – and it’s tough: different rules apply depending on the platform and country, and in Japan there’s even a ticking clock. If you pre-order, you should know this beforehand.
Regional hurdles
Rockstar Games has confirmed on its Grand Theft Auto 6 support page: Physical editions do not contain a disc, only a download code. How this code works depends on the platform and country of purchase. GTA 6 will be released on November 19th, 2026, and the game can be preloaded from November 12th. Microsoft players can breathe a sigh of relief because, according to Rockstar, Xbox codes are not region-specific and can be redeemed worldwide. Things are different with the PlayStation 5: Because PSN accounts (PlayStation Network) are assigned to a region, the code only works with an account from the matching country of purchase.
Rockstar therefore recommends only buying in the country in which your own PSN account is registered. This list shows which countries are summarized:
For German buyers this means: A code from the “Rest of EMEA and Asia” region can only be activated with a PSN account from one of these countries.
Expires in 170 days
A special rule applies to Japan: physical PS5 codes expire there 170 days after the issue date, which corresponds to the launch date. Mathematically, this results in May 8, 2027 as the last redemption day. Rockstar cites local regulatory requirements as the reason, without explaining them in more detail. Xbox codes are not affected by this and generally do not expire in Japan. Grand Theft Auto 6: Rockstar Games shows the second trailer
It remains unclear whether the expiration date refers to the base game or just a separate DLC code (downloadable content) that will be delivered separately in Japan. Rockstar has not yet commented on this.
Criticism and ambiguities
On social networks, users compared digital purchasing without a disc to a rental model rather than real ownership. The debate about the missing physical version is not new. Theoretically, the region lock could be bypassed using a PSN account in another country. However, according to the Terms of Service (EULA), this is against the rules and could lead to account suspension.
Despite the criticism, according to an analysis firm, GTA 6 has the strongest pre-order campaign in the industry and is expected to sell between 37 and 51 million units in the first week alone. The game will initially be released exclusively for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S – a PC version is expected to follow later.
