Airbnb hosts are no longer allowed to force guests to do heavy housework

Airbnb is changing its rules for hosts and banning extensive cleaning work for guests starting in November. In the future, travelers will no longer have to wash up or strip beds before they leave. The changes have met with resistance from some landlords.

No more time-consuming cleaning

Good news for travelers: For reservations starting November 20, 2026, Airbnb is prohibiting hosts from requiring travelers to perform tasks typically performed by professional cleaners. This includes time-consuming work that guests often had to do despite paying a cleaning fee. According to the platform’s policies, cleaning fees set by hosts are intended solely to cover standard tasks such as vacuuming or laundry after departure. In the past, users have often complained about having to complete long lists of obligations despite these fees.

In the future, the new requirements must be listed in a special section of the advertisement before booking. Hosts are no longer allowed to subsequently communicate additional rules via messages or through signs in the property.

These tasks are taboo

Reports The Verge Airbnb restricts this Requirements to the guests. While landlords are still allowed to make reasonable requests, tasks that require a lot of time or significant effort are prohibited. Specifically, the platform gives the following examples of inadmissible claims:

  • Guests may not be asked to wash and put away dishes.
  • It is prohibited to remove the beds or start a washing machine.
  • Guests may not be asked to remove trash from the property.
  • It remains reasonable for travelers to put dirty dishes in the sink, collect used towels, separate waste indoors or turn off the air conditioning. Exceptions to stricter requirements apply in special local circumstances, such as disposing of waste in bear-proof bins or limiting shower times in the event of regional water shortages.

    Resistance from the hosts

The measures are controversial and unpopular on the other side of the equation: some landlords are pushing back against the changes in forums, arguing that the restrictions pose health risks. They fear that the model is being adapted too closely to classic hotels. Individual hosts threaten to remove their advertisements. Landlords who do not adhere to the new regulations will face consequences. Airbnb warns that violations can result in warnings being issued, listings being removed or, in the worst case, accounts being completely banned from the platform.
