Developed at China’s Huazhong University, thermogalvanic cells offer a potential alternative to traditional refrigeration technology. According to a recent study, published in Joule, thermogalvanic cooling could significantly reduce CO2 emissions compared to current systems.
“Thermogalvanic cooling with a potentially low CO2 footprint is an environmentally friendly technology that will promote CO2 neutrality when its use is widespread,” said Jiangjiang Duan, the study’s senior author.
This innovative technology has a wide range of potential applications, from portable cooling devices to industrial systems. Thermogalvanic cells work by utilizing the heat generated during reversible chemical reactions to produce electrical energy. For instance, this system has been tested on mobile phone batteries to both cool them and convert waste heat into electricity.
While earlier studies showed limitations in cooling performance, recent advancements have improved efficiency by 70% with chemical optimization. This puts the technology closer to being viable for commercial use.
When Can We Expect Thermogalvanic Refrigerators?
Despite these promising developments, thermogalvanic refrigerators are still years away from hitting the market. “Although our advanced electrolyte is commercially available, further efforts in system design, scalability, and stability are required to bring this technology to practical use,” Duan explained.
The researchers plan to continue improving thermogalvanic cooling performance by developing new mechanisms and advanced materials. They’re also working on creating refrigerator prototypes for different use cases and seeking partnerships with companies to help bring the technology to market.
The potential for thermogalvanic cooling to revolutionize refrigeration is undeniable, but as with any innovation, it will require time and collaboration before it becomes a household reality.
