Active 3D glasses for cinema evenings at home

The Dangbei ACG03 is an active shutter 3D glasses for the Dangbei Atom. It has a 60 mAh battery that should last for 60 hours of operation. Active playback should last up to 2400 minutes. The Dangbei 3D glasses weigh 28 grams, which is achieved through the open design. The glasses come with a cleaning cloth and a USB cable.

There is also an information booklet that explains how to use the glasses in more detail. If you don’t want to enjoy 3D films alone, you should buy two pairs of glasses so that both viewers can enjoy a similar cinema experience. In this case, you have everything twice and also a replacement should one of the USB cables get lost. Unfortunately, it is still a micro USB. A micro USB port is a bit smaller, which is probably why Dangbei opted for this outdated connection.

There is a power button on the top of the glasses. If you press and hold this button, the glasses turn on. An unobtrusive blue LED then flashes in the white power button. The ACG03 then automatically connects to the projector. On the front of the glasses, there is a DLP-Link chip in the middle of the two lenses. Dangbei says the lens size is twice as large as that of other 3D glasses.

Our colleague Timm Mohn has no comparison with 3D glasses from other manufacturers, but can attest to the following about the ACG03: Ghost images, which are supposed to be reduced by the increased chip size, could not be detected during the last film evenings.

Compatible with many projectors

The glasses are basically compatible with all 3D-capable DLP projectors. This includes the Dangbei DBOX02 and its predecessor, the Dangbei Mars Pro. The manufacturer’s own Atom and the DBOX02 both have Google TV and are Netflix-certified. The Dangbei Mars Pro, on the other hand, supports 3D films, but cannot compete with Netflix. The brighter a projector is, the better the 3D image appears. Even though the lenses of the ACG03 are relatively bright, the comparison between 3D glasses and sunglasses is not entirely unreasonable.

While 3D films are becoming increasingly rare in cinemas, the third dimension in home cinemas is enjoying increasing popularity. 3D in home cinemas is both popular and rare. The price of 3D glasses should not determine this: at 39.99 euros, the ACG03 is quite affordable. A family of four would have to invest 159.96 euros.

The 1200 ISO lumen bright Dangbei Atom currently costs 799 euros on Amazon. On the product page, the ACG03 can be selected as a free product from among qualified products. Anyone who wanted to get into the third dimension anyway can save 40 euros. The DBOX02, which is significantly brighter with 2450 ISO lumens, is currently available on Amazon for 1499 euros.
