AI Boom Faces $800 Billion Revenue Shortfall by 2030, Study Warns

The worldwide race for market shares in the AI sector makes companies such as Openai, Google or Microsoft invest huge sums in new data centers and infrastructure. None of this is counter -financed.

Far too few income

According to a current analysis, the development of the income is far behind the expenditure planning. According to calculations by the management consultancy Bain & Company, the industry will face a massive financial hole by 2030. According to the one published on Tuesday “Global Technology Report“If AI companies will need around two trillion dollars of annual sales by the end of the decade in order to be able to finance the growing demand for computing power. In fact, only about $ 1.2 trillion can be expected – a deficit of around $ 800 billion.

The study thus highlights the sustainability of the current AI euphoria. Although the use of voice models and other applications is growing rapidly worldwide, the promised efficiency gains and new sources of income are not yet sufficient to cover the gigantic investments. “If the previous scaling laws exist, AI will increasingly burden the global supply chains,” warns David Crawford, head of the global technology sector at Bain.

Individual companies such as Openaai are currently writing losses in billions of bills, but rely on strong growth and, according to media reports, expect positive cash flows at the earliest from 2029. At the same time, technology giants such as Microsoft, Amazon and Meta significantly increase their annual expenses for AI – until the early 2030s, they could reach more than $ 500 billion.

Energy in focus

The consequences can also be felt in the energy supply. Bain predicts that the additional global need for computing power could increase to 200 gigawatts of power consumption by 2030, half of them in the United States alone. It remains to be seen whether technological breakthroughs or more efficient algorithms can alleviate this trend.

In addition to AI, Bain also names future fields such as quantum computing, which could release up to $ 250 billion in value potential in the coming years. Humanoid robots are also in focus, whose development is still in its infancy, but the early tests of which could lay the basis for future commercial success.
