Apple has just presented the new models in the Apple iPhone 12 series. This time there are two cheaper models: the iPhone 12 and the iPhone 12 Mini. So Apple is finally building the “small” iPhone that many customers have dreamed of for years – including 5G.
The most important announcement this evening for Apple is that with the iPhone 12 mini, iPhone 12, iPhone 12 Pro, and iPhone 12 Pro Max, support for the new generation of mobile communications is finally being integrated. 5G is now landing on a broad front in Apple smartphones and should therefore bring with it a strong boost in the expansion of new mobile networks due to the huge interest of customers.
The head of the US network operator Verizon was the first guest on the virtual Apple stage and promised downstream speeds of up to four gigabits per second and an upstream of up to 200 megabits per second. Among other things, they want to enable very low latencies and new user experiences, although of course it always remains to be seen to what extent the full-bodied promises of the network operators can be implemented in reality. It is interesting that Apple is basically equipping all iPhones for the US market with support for mmWave networks and thus offers 5G support, where other providers concentrate on the sub-6 GHz networks most used in Europe and Asia.
Visually, the new iPhones hardly differ from their predecessors, at least when viewed from the front. The notch shrinks slightly, the display is just as completely flat as the back. This is made possible by the flat edges used on aluminum or stainless steel housing, which are visually reminiscent of the design of the iPhone SE and iPhone 5. At the same time, Apple promises that the devices have been made much more compact than before.
The iPhone 12 again has an OLED display, which is called “Retina XDR” and has a diagonal of 6.1 inches, but the screen is kept completely flat and merges practically seamlessly into the housing frame. The device should be 11 percent thinner and 15 percent smaller than its predecessor – with the same display size.
With the also newly introduced iPhone 12 mini, Apple is introducing a really small smartphone for the first time in years. With a display diagonal of just 5.3 inches, the device is still significantly smaller than the last iPhone SE 2020 and in terms of design and features corresponds in most points to the “normal”, larger models.
With a coating called “Ceramic Shield”, the display will in the future be optimally protected against scratches, knocks, and other damage, despite the completely flat design of the devices. The iPhone 12 Mini should also offer the same features – just in a much smaller form factor. This also applies to the performance and the cameras.
Under the hood is of course the new Apple A14 Bionic, whose performance with six CPU cores is known to set new standards in terms of smartphone performance. At the same time, the graphics unit should also offer considerable performance and thus outperform the competition in smartphones by up to 50 percent. Of course, Apple has also invested again in its dedicated machine learning solution and AI processing.
For the cameras, Apple uses a combination of two 12 megapixel sensors in the iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 mini. The wide-angle camera offers a maximum aperture size of f / 2.4 and a 120-degree field of view. The main camera gets a new sensor and a new lens and, as mentioned, also has 12 megapixels.
With a maximum aperture size of f / 1.6 and optical image stabilizer, a new seven-part optics, and autofocus pixels, it should capture even more light and again be extremely suitable for recording videos. The front camera now also gets a night mode and Apple also promises that thanks to new software improvements, some of the image quality has been improved.
Incidentally, Apple also announced yesterday that it will be dispensing with the delivery of power supplies with immediate effect, taking into account the fact that around two billion iPhone chargers have now been sold. It is interesting that Apple is also introducing what is known as MagSafe for iPhone. Magnets are integrated underneath the glass cover on the back and not only want to ensure that covers and sleeves are securely attached, but also enable a whole ecosystem of new accessory products at the same time.
In the US, the new iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 Mini models will soon be available at prices starting at $ 799 and $ 699. The customer can choose from a relatively wide range of colors, including black, white, red, blue, and light green.
