Amazon Interested In Buying Film Maker MGM For $9 Billion

The retail giant Amazon has invested heavily in Prime Video in recent years and has repeatedly bought films for quite a bit of money. But now the Seattle company is likely to dig deep into their pockets because they want to buy the MGM film studio.

Although the last Oscars, which were marked by a pandemic, are not necessarily a completely objective yardstick, this year’s Academy Awards have shown that the trend is increasingly towards streaming. It can therefore be assumed that names such as Netflix and Amazon will be mentioned more and more frequently as award winners in the future.

In the case of Amazon, there is now also the fact that the retail company and Prime Video operator could or should soon have one of the most famous Hollywood studios in its possession. Because as the industry medium Variety reports, Amazon has been negotiating a takeover of MGM for weeks and is about to close.

MGM Studios

The studio founded as Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer almost 100 years ago (1924) is one of the oldest and best-known Hollywood, the opening credits or logo with a roaring lion is legendary. According to Variety, MGM has been a takeover candidate for a while, tech giants have been eyeing the company for a long time. In the case of Amazon, however, a new level has been reached, it is said that the talks are correspondingly specific.

The price is quoted as a sum of nine billion dollars, but this could still change. Because according to different sources numbers fall between seven and ten billion dollars, but there are also voices that rate MGM with only five billion dollars.

With a takeover of MGM, Amazon would get a huge archive of films with series like James Bond, The Hobbit, and Rocky / Creed as well as strips like The Silence of the Lambs, Four Weddings, and a Death, A Fish Called Wanda, and many more. There are also around 17,000 episodes of TV series, including Stargate SG-1 and its offshoots, Vikings, Fargo, The Handmaid’s Tale, etc.
