Amazon Prime Video pushes forward with “Robocop” series

How Variety reported, Amazon Prime Video is currently working hard on a new TV series based on the sci-fi classic Robocop. The streaming service has now filled two important positions: Peter Ocko (“Lodge 49”, “The Office”) will act as author, executive producer and showrunner, while horror expert James Wan (“Aquaman”, “Saw”) is on board as executive producer. The plot of the series is said to stay close to the original: A technology company cooperates with the local police to create a state-of-the-art law enforcement officer – a police officer who is half human, half machine. Fans can therefore look forward to many (hopefully well implemented) familiar elements.

Robocop as a critique of the times

The Robocop series started in 1987 with the film of the same name, directed by Paul Verhoeven (Starship Troopers, Total Recall). The science fiction action film tells the story of police officer Alex Murphy, who is revived as a cyborg after a fatal injury.

The film was ahead of its time and addressed aspects such as capitalism, corporate power and corruption, but was also accused of glorifying fascist methods – not the only time Verhoeven had to hear this accusation (probably wrongly). The franchise now includes three feature films, a 2014 remake and several TV series. The new Amazon production will be realized by Amazon MGM Studios after the company took over MGM in 2022 for $8.5 billion.

The choice of team suggests that Amazon is aiming for a high-quality adaptation. Ocko’s experience with complex narratives and Wan’s expertise in visually impressive productions could prove to be a promising combination for the Robocop series, industry insiders suspect (and fans hope).
