Amazon has formed a team for Amazon Web Services (AWS) in Pakistan. The company has registered a local office under Amazon Data Services Pakistan (Pvt) Ltd name. The aim is to push cloud computing adoption.
A couple of weeks after Amazon experienced disruption globally, this step has been taken. Paul Andrew Macpherson will lead the Pakistan office as the CEO while Shoaib Munir will be the director, Pakistan Today reported.
An Amazon spokesperson revealed that Amazon is presently looking for a public policy specialist for Pakistan. He said that the focus would be on driving AWS cloud computing solution adoption. The focus is to remove regulatory and political blockers to cloud adoption.
State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) directed banks to make use of the technology under the “Framework on IT Governance and Risk Management in Financial Institutions. This would be done under the condition that the systems, physical servers, and service providers will be located in Pakistan. If this rule is followed, AWS would have to set up its own data center and cloud server in Pakistan.

It is pertinent to mention here that the first cloud policy of Pakistan is to be formulated as per the e-commerce policy framework of Pakistan, the Ministry of Information Technology and Telecommunication. The Draft Data Protection Act is also near approval.
