AMD’s RDNA 3 seems better than Nvidia in terms of efficiency

AMD continues to work diligently on its next-generation entry-level and low-mid-range GPU Navi 33. The rumored analyst gives the graphics chips a clear edge over Nvidia, especially in terms of efficiency. There are signs of a shift in the GPU market.

Navi 33: 6nm, Navi 21 level screening

In the exchange of blows to graphics card customers, AMD is gearing up to release a new GPU class aimed at entry-level and lower-midrange customers. From the well-known leaker with the beautiful name “Moore’s Law Is Dead”, abbreviated MLID, there is another Overview (through Notebook Check), which he wants to be able to report unofficially about the upcoming Navi 33 GPU. Earlier rumors had indicated that AMD is going for a monolithic GPU package with a single GPU chip. MLID now adds 6nm architecture in the range of 360mm – 460mm2 area.

In addition, the leaker claims to have learned that AMD currently wants to use a 128 MB Infinity Cache, but at the moment it cannot be ruled out that 256 MB Infinity Cache could also be used – it is still too early for definitive statements here. The statements about the intended performance are clearer: Navi 33, therefore, offers a raster performance similar to that of Navi 21. Compared to the performance of the RX 6900 XT, that would mean that Navi 33 can sustain at least 1080p here. Raytracing performance would increase “much more obviously”, but comparative values ​​are not here.

Efficiency is king

In order to do justice to the mid-range classification, AMD would have put some restrictions on the Navi 33 in this expansion. Accordingly, the AMD chip has to be coupled with only 8 GB of GDDR6 memory and a 128-bit bus. The storage speed should therefore be 18 Gbit/s, as higher speeds are reserved for the mid-range and high-end offerings. Last but not least, MLID compares it to the competition. Several AMD engineers have emphasized to him that RDNA 3 with a power budget of 180 to 230 watts “will beat Nvidia in terms of efficiency across the entire product range”.
