Android 13 Beta 2 released for Pixels and selected third-party phones

Android 13 first beta Pixels a few days ago. With Google I/O happening right now, it’s the perfect time for a 2nd beta. Android 13 Beta 2 is available today for Pixel phones and select partner devices, including phones, tablets, and foldables.

Like Beta 1 before it, today’s release is primarily meant for developers to begin prepping their apps for an official release later this year. That said, we were generally surprised to find Google’s most recent beta release to be among its most stable yet, so if you haven’t already upgraded your phone to Android 13, now might be the perfect time to do it.

As with Beta 1, today’s release isn’t overflowing with new features — in fact, it’s a relatively small update overall. Instead, Beta 2 serves to deliver a more concrete vision of what Android 13 is shaping up to be, with a focus on privacy and security, as well as expanded personalization options on top of those added in last year’s update. From the new photo picker display to a combined Security & privacy menu, Google is looking to make sure user data is as safe as possible. Expanded Material You themes and better support for third-party apps help complete the dream of dynamic themes, and big screen support continues to expand beyond the days of Android 12L.

Though previous developer previews revealed most of these features, Google placing them all into a single announcement on stage makes its vision for Android 13 clear. This is an iterative update, designed to improve on many of the ideas stuffed into last year’s release, all while boosting security for everyone.
