Android 14 forces app developers to be transparency about how they use your location data

Google has always been blamed as a data hog, but it has kept its efforts high on improving privacy features in the Android ecosystem. As with Android 11, apps were restricted and bound to use your data as per your needs and with your consent. With the latest update, Google has restricted apps from unnecessarily tracking your location data. As Android 14 is just a few months away from its launch, Google is dealing with the issues of location tracking and data sharing.

Many apps on your system have access to your location information; some might be using it as per need, but some are sharing it further with third parties. With the launch of Android 14, Google demands that these apps be more transparent in terms of how they access the data of users. As per the announcement via the Android 14 Beta 2 blog post, as with the appearance of location permit notifications, you will be notified by the Play Store about your data being shared by third-party apps.

Mishaal Rahman gave us an overview of how this latest update will work by seeking permissions in the Android 14 developer preview. This will allow developers to provide a brief overview of the use of location data, even for marketing and advertising.

The data is taken from the app’s Play Store listing’s Data Safety section, which was first made available last year. Because Android automatically condenses data gathering practices into user-facing highlights that can be seen when setting up app permissions, app developers only need to keep their Play Store listings up to date.
