Android 15 release date has now leaked

Google is currently preparing the release of Android 15, but a date was not yet known. But this has now apparently leaked: October 15, 2024. As always, Pixel users will be the first to receive the update, while owners of other devices will have to wait a bit.

Android 15: Launch date for Pixel devices announced

For a long time it was unclear when it would come, but it will probably soon be here: The long-awaited Android 15 update is in the starting blocks. How Android Headlines reported (via Android Authority), the latest version of the mobile operating system is scheduled to be made available to all compatible Pixel devices from October 15, 2024. Android 15 is codenamed “Vanilla Ice Cream” – this is of course a reference to the practice of naming Android versions after desserts.

Although Google has officially discontinued these, the internal code names live on. The update will be available for Pixel devices from the 6 series onwards. Owners of older models will have to forego the upgrade. For the Pixel 6 and 6 Pro, Android 15 also marks the last guaranteed major operating system update, even if security updates will continue to be provided until 2026. Improved stability

This year’s release schedule deviates somewhat from the norm. While Google released the Android 15 code on September 3, 2024 in the Android Open Source Project (AOSP), Pixel users still have to wait until mid-October. But there are of course reasons for this delay. Experts assume that the extra time has allowed Google to thoroughly eliminate possible bugs.

This would be an improvement over previous Android releases, some of which were affected by startup difficulties. In particular, the launch of Android 12 on the Pixel 6 devices did not go exactly smoothly.

Features and improvements

Android 15 promises some innovations. Users can expect improved system integration, expanded AI functions and more extensive customization options. The user interface will also be revised – but fundamental changes should not be expected. A special feature concerns the Pixel 9 series. Contrary to tradition, these devices were introduced in August 2024 and came onto the market with Android 14.

Users of these smartphones will also receive the Android 15 update on October 15th. While Pixel owners will be the first to receive Android 15, users of other Android devices will have to be patient. Depending on the manufacturer, it may take a few weeks or months before the update is available for other smartphone models.
