Android Auto: New Spotify update with a JAM function is here

With the latest app update, Spotify brings the popular jam function to the Android car. Together with up to 32 passengers and users of the streaming service, drivers can now design the music playlist-via QR code and without distraction.

Common music experience in the car

The eternal discussion about who can determine the music selection in the car could soon be a thing of the past. Spotify has published an extensive update for its Android car app, which brings the JAM function to the infotainment system in the vehicle. The update to version 9.0.58.596, which is already available via the Google Play Store, has been announced as part of the Google I/O and is now activated for all users.

Spotify originally introduced the JAM function in September 2023. It enables several users to create and control a playlist together in real time. So far, however, this function was only available on smartphones and tablets. With the integration for Android Auto, the collaborative music selection is now also possible while driving.

QR code makes everyone DJs

For drivers, this means that you can start a JAM session directly from the vehicle’s media playback screen. Other participants can join the session by simply scanning the displayed QR code with their smartphones. Then all passengers can add songs to the joint playlist and control the reproduction.

And all of this without the driver being distracted or the passengers need physical access to the vehicle’s infotainment system. The driver acts as a host and keeps control of the Jam session, with the possibility of removing participants at any time. In total, up to 32 people can create a common playlist – theoretically enough for an entire coach.

Good to know: to start or host a Jam, you need a Spotify premium subscription. However, users of the free version can join an existing session and add songs.

Offline music and new search function

The update not only brings the JAM function, but also further improvements for the Spotify app on Android Auto. There is now a more prominent “downloads” area in the library, which enables music to only use offline available. This could be particularly useful if you drive through rural areas without a stable signal. In addition, an indicator of downloaded tracks is now displayed, while leafing through albums or playlists.

Another important innovation is the floating search link, which opens a dedicated search page for Spotify. So far, the Google Assistant was the only way to look for music, whereby it was played immediately. Now users can search for albums or titles and display the results in the app before selecting something.

Loud 9to5google Other media apps will probably receive similar updates in the coming months. Google has already confirmed that Amazon Music and YouTube Music will also use the additional flexibility. The announcement is part of a larger trend in which Google expands the entertainment offer in vehicles.
