Since Google has not published statistics on the distribution of the different Android versions since the beginning of the year, the numbers are now displayed on a new web page. The data comes from the Android Studio and is updated irregularly.
Although the Android Studio is basically available to all users, only very few users should bother to download the software and evaluate the numbers themselves. For this reason, 9to5google has launched the ” androiddistribution.io ” page. Here the Android distribution is presented using a simple pie chart. In addition to the current data, distributions from previous years are also displayed.
The latest data was provided in April 2020. The Android version with the largest market share is Android 9.0 Pie. The mobile operating system is installed on 31.3 percent of all smartphones that run Android. The latest version, Android 10, only accounts for 8.2 percent. Android 8.0 and Android 8.1 together can be found on 21.3 percent of the devices. Although Android 6.0 Marshmallow is now considered obsolete, the version still has a market share of 11.2 percent.
When looking at the statistics, however, it should be noted that the figures are probably not 100 percent representative. Google counts the number of Android installations by connecting the devices to the Play Store. In addition to smartphones, there are many other devices that are not updated frequently and are still connected to Google services. Conversely, there are also devices that are operated with the latest Android version but have no internet connection.
