Android TV 12 Now Available With New Features

Android 12 has been available for smartphones for a long time and some manufacturers, above all Google itself, have already distributed the associated updates. But the operating system is more than just a mobile phone OS, now Android TV 12 is also getting ready for release.

Android is and remains primarily an operating system that is intended for smartphones or is the first to be available there, but of course, it is also more. And that means in concrete terms: It also forms the basis for Android TV. The latest version, Android 12, has now been released as a TV version. As 9to5Google reports, the final version of Android TV 12 was recently announced via Google’s developer site.

That means stable versions of both Android TV and Google TV, but these are currently only available for Google’s developer dongle ADT-3. It is currently not clear when Android TV 12 will be released to the general public. This (stable) beta is much later than its predecessor Android 11, this version was finally released in September 2020. However, Android 12 was also much later than in previous years.

4K rendering, security and more

The wait should be worth it, however, because Android TV 12 has some features that many have been expecting for a long time. These include the long-overdue support for the 4K rendering of the home screen and user interface, the new data protection indicators and buttons from Android 12, as well as support for HDMI CEC 2.0 and much more.

Google says: “With the official release of Android 12, we are also making the latest version of the platform available for TVs. Take this opportunity to create and test apps so that they can run on the latest Android version on the new Google TV Experience are compatible. Alternatively, the build images for the standard Android TV experience are available for download.”
