Android’s Nearby Share is now available for Windows PCs

Apple users have this really convenient feature called Air Drop that lets them share images between iOS devices with ease. Unfortunately, Android users had no such facility. A nearby share feature was introduced by Google back in 2020 that was surely an amazing feature for Android users to share up their data without a hustle. While exchanging files, it’s quite appropriate to have the same source for sharing files with your desktop too. It looks like Google has found a solution for this too. As per Google’s announcement at CES 2022, it’s planning to make sharing possible with Windows devices, and that time has finally arrived.

Nearby share is now on windows

Google has recently announced this news via a blog post, which has revealed the convenience of sharing content between Android and Windows with the updated version of the Nearby Share Beta application’s Windows version. This app works in the same manner as the Air Drop feature of the iPhone. This will allow users to exchange files between their mobile and desktop devices without wasting storage space or using cloud services.

As long as they don’t use ARM processors, the program can be downloaded from the Android website and used on computers running Windows 64-bit versions 10 and higher. Also, for the transfer to be successful, the devices need to be within 16 feet (5 meters) of one another.

Simply drag and drop a file into the program, or right-click a file and choose the Nearby Share option from the context menu, to use Nearby Share Beta for Windows in a manner identical to its Android counterpart. The recipient list will then display nearby devices.

This app only works on devices that have this feature turned on and are closed together by logging in to your Google account. All these conditions must be met in order to share files. Once these steps are followed, you can share any kind of file between devices. As for customary files, they need to be accepted by another device in order to complete the process.

Although you may always say no, the last thing you want in this situation is for strangers to keep sending you weird files. Fortunately, just like the Android app, you can customize the display of Nearby Sharing on Windows for different levels of contacts. To achieve this, open the settings menu and choose the device visibility section, where you can choose “Everyone,” “Contacts,” “Your devices,” or “No one.”

This feature is new, so it’s currently only available in the US and a few other countries. While some countries are on the exclusion list for the time being,
