Apple A15 Chip Build On 5 Nanometer Process Will Ship Earlier This Year

The production of the new iPhone 13 will enter a decisive phase from May. The supplier TSMC is expected to start mass production of the associated Apple A15 chip as early as next month in order to prevent release delays of the iOS smartphone.

As the colleagues from MacRumors report, referring to a DigiTimes report, the first batch of the System-on-a-Chip (SoC) will be delivered early this year in order to anticipate possible pandemic-related interruptions in the supply chain and a start of the Apple iPhone 13 or iPhone 12s in September 2021. As reported earlier last year, the new Apple A15 chip is to be manufactured in an extended 5-nanometer process that was introduced in its main features with the Apple A14 of the iPhone 12 (Pro).

iPhone 13 Offers Higher Performance, 120Hz And smaller notch

While further details on the new iPhone processor and the delivery situation are expected in the course of the day, analysts and experts have been forecasting the classic improvements for months. The Apple A15 is said to have higher performance and improved energy efficiency. The latter is especially needed if the rumours about an OLED display with a refresh rate of 120Hz and always-on function are confirmed. The additional energy required for this is likely to cause problems for the batteries of the iPhone 13 (Pro), especially if the capacities of these should not expand.

In the rumour mill, the iPhone 13 continues to be assigned a smaller notch including a Face ID camera system and an “optical image stabilization with sensor-shift”, which should no longer be reserved for the Pro Max model. A change from the well-known Lightning connector to the long-awaited USB-C, however, is often discussed, but not expected this year. Experts tend to assume that Apple will switch to a connectionless design in the near future and implement all data transfer and charging options via the new MagSafe interface.
