Apple AirTag 2 Rumored for 2025 Launch: What to Expect

The release of Apple’s AirTag 2 feels closer than ever—if the rumor mill is to be believed. Reports suggest that the updated AirTag could be one of Apple’s first product announcements of 2025, with production rumored to begin late in 2024.

Possible Launch Timeline

According to AppleInsider, Apple plans to launch the AirTag 2 in the first half of 2025. While some speculate it might debut during Apple’s spring iPad event, others believe it will be unveiled during the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in June 2025.

The current AirTag uses Bluetooth, Ultra Wideband (UWB), and Apple’s Find My network to help users locate their belongings. While Apple hasn’t officially confirmed details about AirTag 2, rumors suggest significant upgrades are on the way.

Expected Upgrades and Features

Here’s what we might see in the next-generation AirTag:

  • Extended Tracking Range: AirTag 2 could feature Apple’s latest UWB chip, the same one used in the iPhone 15 and Apple Watch Ultra 2. This would increase its precise tracking range from 100 feet to up to 300 feet.

  • Enhanced Security Features: To address concerns about AirTag misuse, Apple may introduce improved anti-stalking measures. A new, harder-to-remove speaker could provide acoustic alerts when an AirTag separates from its owner and stays with someone else.

  • Integration with Apple Vision Pro: AirTag 2 could play a key role in spatial data processing with Apple’s Vision Pro headset, potentially using UWB technology for motion tracking. This functionality might become available through a future firmware update.

Delayed Production Timeline

Reports indicate that production for AirTag 2 won’t start until the end of 2024. The delay is believed to be due to overproduction of the current AirTags. To make room for the new model, Apple has been clearing out inventory by lowering the original AirTag’s price to historic lows.

While nothing has been officially confirmed yet, the potential improvements in range, security, and integration with Apple’s broader ecosystem make the AirTag 2 an exciting product to watch for in 2025. Stay tuned for more updates!
