Apple Could Force HomeKit Users to Upgrade with iOS 18.4 Release

Apple is gearing up to release iOS 18.4 in early April, and it looks like some changes are coming for HomeKit users. Specifically, those still using the old Home app architecture may need to upgrade to the latest software to continue using their devices without interruptions.

A Push Towards the New Home Architecture

Apple first introduced the option to upgrade to its new Home architecture back in March 2023, alongside the release of iOS 16.4, iPadOS 16.4, and macOS Ventura 13.3. The company promoted the new architecture as offering faster and more reliable performance, particularly for homes with a lot of smart accessories.

But not everyone jumped on board. The update’s initial release had issues, leading Apple to temporarily pull it in December 2022. Many users reported problems such as:

• HomeKit devices getting stuck in “updating” or “configuring” statuses
• Devices disappearing entirely from the app
• Failing invitations to share control of HomeKit setups
• Issues with HomeKit Secure Video recording

Because of these bugs, some users were hesitant to trust the update’s stability.

Compatibility Concerns

Another reason many users opted out of upgrading was compatibility. The new Home architecture doesn’t work with the Home app on devices running older versions of iOS, iPadOS, and macOS. This left users with older devices unable to use the updated architecture.

What’s Changing in iOS 18.4?

Code uncovered in iOS 18.4 beta 3 by MacRumors contributor Aaron Perris suggests Apple may soon end support for the original HomeKit architecture. One of the code strings includes a warning:

“Support for your current version of Apple Home will end soon. Update now to avoid interruptions with your accessories and automations.”

While it’s unclear if this change will take effect immediately when iOS 18.4 launches, the existence of this warning strongly hints that the old HomeKit architecture won’t be supported in iOS 19, expected in September.
