Apple has started developing its own 5G cellular modem. With this step, Apple should be able to replace all Qualcomm components in the long term – the iPhone manufacturer had previously argued with the chip manufacturer for years.
This is reported by Bloomberg. Apple had announced the takeover of the Intel modem division in mid-2019, now there are new details on how Apple has worked with the new options so far. It is now said that Apple’s chip division boss Johny Srouji has announced in an internal town hall meeting that Apple has started work on a completely new development of a 5G cellular modem. Also at LTE modem is already underway.
“This year we began development of our first in-house cellular modem, which will enable another important strategic transition. Long-term strategic investments like these are critical to enabling our products and ensuring we have a rich pipeline of innovative technologies for our future, “Bloomberg quotes Johny Srouji.
The latest 5G iPhones use corresponding parts from Qualcomm. Previously, Apple used parts of Intel for years, then the group took over the entire business unit from the chip manufacturer in order to become more independent.
The Apple modems are to be used in future devices. The in-house development may then already find its way into the iPhone 13. However, there is an agreement with Qualcomm, which provided for a six-year licensing pact from 2019. The exact details of this deal are not known. It is therefore assumed that Apple will use its own chips in the coming year.
