Apple, Google, and China All Joined the Race to Win the 6G Technology

Could this be true? We haven’t been able to explore 5G to the fullest that China talks about 6G. Well, China is not the only one, though. Previously, we heard something similar from former US president, Donald Trump:

“I want 5G, and even 6G, technology in the United States as soon as possible. It is far more powerful, faster, and smarter than the current standard. American companies must step up their efforts, or get left behind.”

We also heard from PhoneArena that Apple and Google had joined the 6G realm. We also saw some related job postings in Apple. One job description had a prerequisite, asking to “research and design next generation (6G) wireless communication systems for radio access networks” and “participate in industry/academic forums passionate about 6G technology.”

Apart from Apple and Google, China had been working on this new technology. According to a report, the China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA) announced last week that the country has a lead in 6G-related intellectual property. The CNIPA announced on World Intellectual Property Day, “out of approximately 38,000 patents related to 6G worldwide, 13,449 or 35% came from China.” The US stood second with 18% of the 6G patents.

On the other hand, CNIPA also advised the nation to “utilize its technological advantage in 5G to continue staying ahead.” The body also advised to look for partnerships with companies like NEC, Samsung, and Mitsubishi “to reduce reliance on American and European technologies” and stay ahead.

Although China holds 355 of the total 6G patents, only one company cracks the top ten list. The top three global companies with 6G patents are NEC, Daewoo Communications, and Mitsubishi. It is said that Artificial Intelligence will play a large role in 6G, where China holds a whopping 75% of the 6G patents in this area.
