At the arch-rival Apple now allegedly is looking for help: According to information from industry circles, the iPhone group has discussions with Google in order to reorganize the weakening language assistant Siri using the Gemini AI platform.
This would make one of the toughest competitors in the smartphone market as a possible partner for a core function of the iPhone, such as Bloomberg reports. Insiders report that Apple has contacted the Alphabet subsidiary to create a tailor-made language model that could serve as the basis for a renewed siri from next year. The aim is to finally raise the elderly technology of the voice assistant to a contemporary level.
According to information from Bloomberg, Google has already started training a model that could run on Apple’s servers. At the same time, Apple also explores other options: both Openaai and Anthropic were involved in similar conversations. The negotiations are complicated. The group is currently testing different approaches in parallel – an internal Siri version with the code name Linwood and an alternative model called Glenwood, which is based on external partners.
Apple itself also fights with technical problems: The existing code base of Siri is considered to be difficult to adapt to modern AI models. The update of Siri, which was originally supposed to appear long ago, has therefore been postponed by one year.
A final decision as to whether Google is awarded the contract or put Apple on another partner is only expected in a few weeks.
