Apple Intelligence drives iPhone development: 12 GB of RAM planned

Apple is apparently planning a significant jump in iPhone RAM. Future models could receive up to 12 GB of RAM in the next step – an important step for the resource-hungry Apple Intelligence.

More performance for intelligent features

Experts see this as a decisive advantage for future AI functions. Apple is about to make a major upgrade to its iPhone range. The technology group from Cupertino is apparently planning to significantly increase the RAM in future iPhone models. This move could be crucial to address Apple’s growing intelligence needs and equip devices for upcoming AI features. Apple has already increased the RAM to 8 GB with the current iPhone 15 series. This was necessary to run Apple Intelligence’s new AI features smoothly. But it seems as if this is just the beginning of a larger development.

Renowned analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, known for his accurate predictions about Apple products, assumes that the iPhone 17 Pro will be released next year 12 GB RAM will be equipped. According to Kuo, this trend could continue, so that in the subsequent iPhone 18 series all models may be equipped with 12 GB of RAM.

New packaging technology

In addition to simply increasing the RAM, Apple is apparently also planning technological improvements in the integration of components. A leaker calling himself “Mobile Chip Expert” reports on the Chinese social media platform Weibo about a possible switch from the current InFO (Integrated Fan-Out) packaging technology to the more advanced WMCM (Wafer-Level Multi-Chip) technology modules).

While InFO already enables the integration of various components on one board, WMCM offers even more flexibility. This technology allows multiple chips such as CPU, GPU, DRAM and dedicated AI accelerators to be combined in a single package. The result: improved efficiency and performance while saving space.

Apple’s focus on AI performance

The planned RAM increase underscores Apple’s growing focus on AI capabilities. With 12GB of RAM, future iPhones could handle even more demanding AI tasks. This could pave the way for more advanced voice assistants, improved real-time image editing, or even real-time on-device translations.

More challenges

However, increasing RAM also brings challenges. More RAM usually means more power consumption, which could affect battery life. Apple has to find a balance between performance and efficiency here – on the other hand, more RAM opens up new possibilities for developers.
