Apple is about to unveil its latest iPhone generation, the iPhone 16 series. Next month is the time and speculation about new features and, above all, innovations is at its peak. But one analyst is now dampening expectations.
While expectations for the upcoming September event are high, the truly groundbreaking innovations may not come until 2025 with the iPhone 17 series – this is the conclusion of the new Analysis by Bloomberg author Mark Gurman. So what is Apple planning with the iPhone 16 series, and what does the future of the iPhone line look like? According to Gurman, Apple’s strategy with the iPhone 16 is to stabilize sales while the company prepares for more significant innovations in 2025. This had already been hinted at.
Since the iPhone lineup received a major overhaul in 2020, annual updates have not included any major changes. That is not currently expected to change this year. However, the iPhone 16 series could lay the foundation for future developments.
One of the outstanding features of the iPhone 16 series will be the integration of the AI innovation “Apple Intelligence”, which should work on all models. In addition, the non-Pro versions of the iPhone 16 could get an action button that was previously reserved for the Pro models. This button could control various functions and thus make the operation of the smartphone even more intuitive.
What is Apple Intelligence? Apple Intelligence is an innovative technology that uses artificial intelligence (AI) to make the iPhone smarter. It includes advanced functions such as personalized recommendations, better voice control and improved image processing. These AI-based features are intended to optimize the user experience by making everyday tasks easier and more efficient. Why won’t Apple Intelligence initially launch in Europe? Apple Intelligence is not allowed to launch in Europe initially because stricter data protection laws such as the GDPR apply here.
These regulations require that all data collected is comprehensively protected and user privacy is guaranteed. Apple must ensure that the new AI functions meet these high standards before they can be introduced in Europe. Adapting to these legal requirements requires additional time and resources, which is why Apple is initially limiting the launch to the USA. The company is working with the EU Commission on a solution.
One of the most exciting new features concerns the camera. Apple could introduce a new camera button on the right side of the Pro models. This button is intended to trigger autofocus and take photos with a firm press, similar to a DSLR camera.
The Pro models of the iPhone 16 could also get larger displays. The iPhone 16 Pro could have a 6.3-inch display, while the Pro Max model could offer an impressive 6.9-inch display. All four models (iPhone 16, 16 Plus, 16 Pro and 16 Pro Max) are said to come with 8 GB of RAM to meet the requirements of the new AI features.
While the iPhone 16 series already offers promising improvements, the really big innovations could come with the iPhone 17 series in September 2025. Apple is rumored to be introducing a new model variant called the iPhone “Slim” or iPhone Air, which will sit between the standard and Pro models and offer a good balance of features and affordability.
A new iPhone SE is also expected in early 2025. This model could pack some of the popular features of the iPhone 14 series into a smaller body and also come with the new Apple Intelligence – but that has not yet been confirmed. And now it’s your turn: What do you expect from the launch of the iPhone 16? What about you – do you want to buy a new iPhone in the fall?
