Apple Is Becoming Heavily Dependent On iPhone Sales

Despite several attempts, Apple has failed to diversify its revenues. The dependence on the iPhone as a source of revenue has recently become even more severe after sales of all other standalone products declined.

iPhone 15 Starts Stronger

Apple generated sales totaling $89.5 billion in the last quarter – 1 percent less than in the same period last year. However, the strong start of the new iPhone 15 generation ensured that direct income from smartphone sales climbed to a new high – at least as far as comparable values from other third quarters are concerned.

The iPhone brought $43.8 billion into the company’s coffers, 2.8 percent more than last year. The devices therefore directly account for 49 percent of group sales. The Services business was once again the second largest area with sales of $22.3 billion, an increase of 16.3 percent compared to the previous year. Here the company manages to become at least a little more independent of pure hardware sales.

However, all other business areas recorded lower sales than last year. The Mac, for example, brought in $7.6 billion in revenue, a decline of 33.8 percent. The iPad brought in $6.4 billion in sales, down 10.2 percent. And wearables, home, and accessories came in at $9.3 billion, down 3.4 percent.

iPhone is an economic power

However, product segments such as services, wearables, homes, and accessories are largely dependent on the iPhone and its broad installation base. Accordingly, it can at least be estimated that well over 80 percent of the group’s sales depend directly or indirectly on the smartphone. This means that Apple is dependent on a product to a similar extent as Google, for example, is dependent on the advertising market.

It would be an advantage for Apple if it managed to distribute its income across more pillars. However, these are also luxury problems. After all, the Californian company can generate more revenue with the iPhone and the associated services, content, and accessories alone than the second most valuable company in the world after Apple – Microsoft – with all of its products. The Redmond company made $56.5 billion in the last quarter.
