Apple is experimenting with a feature that will allow App Store developers to undercut competitors’ subscription fees

According to Apple, it has started testing a new feature for the App Store dubbed “contingent pricing,” which will assist developers in luring users in with lower subscription costs depending on their past purchases. Customers who currently subscribe to other services, whether those services are their competitors’ apps or their own, will be able to receive discounts from developers thanks to the contingent pricing model. Prior to being made available to further developers “in the coming months,” it will first be tested with a small number of participants.

In a post on the Apple Developer website, Apple stated that “you can offer customers a discounted subscription price as long as they’re actively subscribed to another subscription.” Contingent pricing for subscriptions on the App Store is a new feature that helps you attract and retain subscribers. “Subscriptions from one developer or two different developers can be used with it.” According to 9to5Mac, Apple went on to say that for customers to find and take advantage of the benefits, these aggressive reductions will be prominently apparent to them both on the App Store and “in off-platform marketing channels.

This coincides with continued criticism of Apple’s App Store policies and handling of in-app purchases, which reached a boiling point during Apple’s legal spat with Epic Games, the company that owns Fortnite. This autumn, Apple requested that the Supreme Court overturn an earlier decision that mandated that it permit developers to avoid its thirty percent transaction fee by endorsing third-party payment systems. However, it’s still searching for methods to win back the favor of developers. Next month, the business promises to provide more details about the new initiative.
