Apple launches iOS 27 Beta 2 and shows what users can expect from autumn

Apple is launching the second preview version of the upcoming iPhone operating system. The latest update not only brings practical control functions for the smart home, but also improves cross-device communication.

Second test phase for developers started

The test version with build number 24A5370h follows the first version that Apple made available following the WWDC 2026 developer conference in June. The focus is on adjustments related to the smart home and the digital Wallet. With the update, users can update a connected Apple TV directly via the Home app for the first time. The process is based on the well-known update of HomePod and HomePod Mini. There is also a new area in the wallet app called “Insights”.

A splash screen announces features such as viewing account balances, recurring transactions, and spending analytics, but these are not currently active. As AppleInsider reports, Apple has also revised details of the AI functions. A “Write with Siri” button now appears directly above the keyboard, for example in Mail or Notes. Previously, the feature was only available after selecting text. The manufacturer is also improving the RCS message standard. You can now write targeted replies to individual RCS messages on the iPhone. Reactions to images and videos in chats with Android users appear as emojis instead of text. This simplifies communication between the platforms.

System adjustments and app departure

Media controls remain visible on the lock screen as long as content is playing in the background. Apple is also fixing a problem with smart home accessories such as Philips Hue lamps, some of which did not respond in the first beta.

At the same time, the AirPort Utility app will disappear from the App Store under iOS 27. Versions that have already been installed can continue to be used, but error-free functionality is no longer guaranteed. Apple discontinued the associated router series years ago. The final version of iOS 27 is expected to be released in September 2026. A public beta is planned for July. Until then, further test versions can be expected in which functions will be added and system stability will be improved.
