Apple: Maps Updated To Show Black Lives Matter Mural Leading To White House

Days after Washington, DC Mayor Muriel Bowser has allowed a Black Lives Matter mural to be painted on one of the streets leading to the White House, Apple has updated its satellite imagery in Apple Maps to show the gigantic yellow letters.

Spotted by 9to5Mac over the weekend, you can see the mural in the app when zooming out in satellite view over 16th Street. The mural, which can be seen from space, was created by artists last week after Mayor Bowser, who also renamed the street portion Black Lives Matter Plaza, gave the green light.

Google Maps, Waze and Bing have been modified to reflect the name Black Lives Matter Plaza, although the respective satellite maps of Google and Bing also need to be applied to their images.

The mural comes as tens of thousands of people across the U.S. (and around the world) continue to protest against acts of racial discrimination and senseless police violence after George Floyd ‘s death in police custody on 25 May. Similar murals have appeared in many cities throughout the United States.

Several major tech firms, including Apple and Google, have since pledged millions of dollars to help social justice, civil rights groups, and black communities. Apple CEO Tim Cook has already written an open letter on discrimination, which is displayed on the website’s main section.
