With the announced restrictions for users who do not want to accept WhatsApp’s new terms and conditions, the messenger could threaten to be kicked out of the Apple App Store. According to a media report, WhatsApp violates the store guidelines.

WhatsApp has announced that users who do not accept the new data protection regulations will be excluded from certain functions of the messaging app. According to Apple Scoop, such a measure would be a change in the services offered via the app. Apple Scoop quotes the store policies as follows:
“Apps should allow the user to get what they paid for without doing additional tasks like posting on social media, uploading contacts, checking into the app after a certain number of times, etc. Apps should not require users to rate the app, review the app, watch videos, download other apps, tap advertisements, enable tracking, or take any other similar action to access features or content on the app use or receive monetary or other compensation, including, but not limited to, gift cards and codes. Therefore, WhatsApp’s actions are not permitted under the App Store’s policies, According to Apple’s guidelines, this can lead to the app being removed from the App Store or the developer account being terminated.”

A restriction of the functions violates Apple’s App Store guidelines, which explicitly state that such behavior is strictly forbidden. Ergo, if WhatsApp implements the announced changes, the app could be removed from the App Store. WhatsApp had already confirmed that the users will be blocked gradually from the functions – first the chat, then the calls, which makes the app practically unusable. Apple Scoop has therefore now contacted Apple Developer Relations directly and is waiting for a response from the company.
