Apple publishes list of more than 250 new iOS 18 features

Apple surprises with an extensive list of new features for iOS 18. Contrary to previous reports, the update brings a multitude of new features – over 250 new features and improvements are now listed. Does iOS 18 have more to offer than expected?

Apple “surprises” with variety of functions

Apple has a 22-page PDF file published which lists over 250 new features and changes for iOS 18. This extensive compilation is surprising, as in recent weeks it has often been said that the upcoming update would bring only a few new features. According to Apple, iOS 18 will be available as a free software update for compatible devices on September 16th. The list includes both major features that have already been announced and previously unknown smaller improvements.

AI support and personalization in focus

One of the highlights is the new “Apple Intelligence” feature, which will only be introduced with iOS 18.1 in October. This AI-powered feature will initially only be available on the iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and all iPhone 16 models, provided the device and Siri language is set to American English. Apple plans to support additional languages over the course of the next year.

Users can also look forward to new customization options for the home screen and control center. The Photos app has also been completely redesigned, and the Messages app is receiving several improvements. A standalone passwords app is also part of the update.

Surprising innovations in detail

Some of the lesser-known or not yet explicitly announced features deserve special attention:

  • CarPlay now supports Spatial Audio in compatible vehicles, for both Apple Music and select third-party apps.
  • Spatial Audio is now supported when streaming audio over AirPlay to a HomePod and select AirPlay-compatible devices.
  • In the Home app, Wi-Fi-based Matter accessories can be added and controlled locally without a smart home hub.
  • The Live Voicemail feature will expand to additional languages and countries, including various variations of English, Spanish, French, German, Japanese, Mandarin, Cantonese and Portuguese.

Wide availability

Apple has confirmed that iOS 18 will be available to the public from September 16, 2024. At the same time, iPadOS 18 will also be released, which also has an extensive list of new features available. The wealth of new features in iOS 18 shows that Apple is delivering a substantial update despite initial skepticism in the media.

While some features, such as AI integration, are initially limited, the update overall offers a wide range of improvements for different user groups. What do you think of the new features in iOS 18? Are there any features you are particularly looking forward to or that you miss? Share your thoughts in the comments!
