This refers to statements from “several people who are directly involved in the production of components”. At the moment, several warehouses are already filled with individual parts. These would already be enough to assemble around 500,000 to 600,000 additional headsets.
Due to this fact and Apple’s low sales forecast, some suppliers had already stopped producing components in mid-May. The Chinese company Luxshare, which assembles the headsets, has also halved its production from the original 2,000 to currently just 1,000 devices per day.
Analysts estimate that Apple has only sold around 370,000 Vision Pro units so far in 2024 and will only add 50,000 more by the end of December. The glasses and components produced so far could be sufficient for a while to satisfy the low demand on the market. In addition, Apple has probably stopped work on the second generation of the Vision Pro.
There were first rumors about this in the summer. Instead, Cupertino is currently reportedly pursuing a plan to develop a significantly cheaper version of the VR glasses. Accordingly, the suppliers are said to have received instructions to prepare for the production of a total of four million such inexpensive units.
Accordingly, Apple even estimates the demand for a budget version of the Vision Pro to be significantly lower than for the original version of the headset. A total of 800,000 units were assumed.
But it’s not just Apple that has problems bringing its VR technology to customers. Just a few weeks ago, Meta also stopped developing its AR glasses after Mark Zuckerberg’s company had sunk several billion US dollars into the project over the years.
