Apple VP of Product Design Departs, Putting Apple’s Hardware Engineering Group Under Restructuring

According to Bloomberg’s report, Tang Tan, the VP of Apple Product Design, is leaving the company. With his departure, the hardware engineering group will undergo restructuring. Tan was heading the iPhone and Apple Watch product design. Reportedly, Tan will be leaving Apple in February. He works under John Ternus, senior vice president of hardware engineering at Apple.

Some employees will get additional roles

Several employees will receive extensive roles after Tan’s departure. The iPhone development will be taken over by Richard Dinh, head of iPhone product design. Whereas Kate Bergeron, VP of Mac hardware engineering, will look after Apple Watch design. Together with overseeing accessory design, Tan also managed the acoustics team that created the AirPods; Matthew Costello, the former Beats CTO, will reportedly take over those two departments. Currently, Costello is already heading Beats and the HomePod.

Tan’s departure has been dubbed “a blow” by Apple employees who talked with Bloomberg since he is in charge of making important decisions about the iPhone, Apple Watch, and AirPods. His team is in charge of the design and features of the product. Well, this news was followed by Bloomberg’s report that stated that Apple hardware VP Steve Hotelling will soon retire. Hotelling was in charge of the camera engineering team. He has worked on several core Apple technologies, like Touch ID, Face ID, haptic feedback, ProMotion, and others.
