Apple will discontinue its online services for devices running out-of-date software
Apple’s operating systems, including iOS and macOS, are inextricably linked to the company’s services. Despite the addition of new capabilities in new software, Apple continues to run its online services on outdated software. But as the business prepares to discontinue its support for some outdated software, this may soon change.
StellaFudge, a leaker, reports that the company will discontinue all of its online services excluding iCloud on devices based on iOS 11, macOS High Sierra, watchOS 4, and tvOS 11. The users will be notified about this change and asked to update their devices if feasible. Well, this is not just the only piece of information coming from StellaFudge. Previously, the leaker has shared some real images of the AirPods Max, and AirTags as well as details about the M1 iPad Pro and the iPhone 12 lineup.
However, the folks at MacRumors suggest that the leaked information is backed by the company. Since the company released a new support article in March that details about the end of support of Apple services on outdated software versions. Users will no longer be able to use Apple Services like the App Store, Siri, and Maps on their older devices.
Well, a software update by Apple doesn’t mean that a device loses its original functionality. Let’s say the iMessage service can still be used on an iPhone 3GS. Similarly, iPhone 4 still supports FaceTime calls. Although the devices don’t support new features but run original ones.
Furthermore, the exact reason behind this decision by the company is unknown. It could be that Apple is preparing a significant under-the-hood upgrade for its online services that may end support for some out-of-date software. For instance, WhatsApp limits access to the app on older devices every year owing to a lack of upgrades and new features.
Well, there are just a handful of users still using outdated Apple software. The company claims that only 8% of iOS devices are still using older software before iOS 15. This suggests that there could not be much of an impact if services are restricted to newer devices. It would be Apple’s first time doing this, though.
