Apple’s C1 Modem: Missing in Action on New iPads

Apple recently introduced its custom-designed C1 modem with the iPhone 16e, marking a significant step in its long-term plan to reduce reliance on Qualcomm modems. However, the C1 has yet to make its way to the new iPads launched earlier this week.

Daring Fireball’s John Gruber reported that he spoke with an Apple representative who confirmed that neither the new iPad Air nor the entry-level iPad feature the C1 modem. Instead, FCC filings reviewed by MacRumors indicate that the cellular versions of these iPads still use Qualcomm modems.

There’s still hope for fans eager to see the C1 modem in more devices this year. According to analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, the upcoming “iPhone 17 Air,” expected to debut in September, will likely include the C1 modem, joining the iPhone 16e in Apple’s push toward in-house modem technology.

Apple’s agreement with Qualcomm lasts through March 2027, giving the company ample time to fully transition to its own modems. Reports suggest Apple is already working on next-gen versions, the C2 and C3, as part of its future roadmap.

For now, Apple claims the C1 modem is the most power-efficient modem it has ever made, with solid performance in both real-world and 5G speed tests. While it’s currently limited to the iPhone lineup, it’s clear Apple has big plans for its custom modem technology in the years to come.
