Are 8 GB VRAM too little? AMD is a clear opinion

Are eight gigabytes of video memory still sufficient for graphics cards in 2025? Many gamers and experts think: no! Chip manufacturer AMD also has a clear opinion on the topic and refers to the habits of the players.
Dispute over video memory for graphics cards
The new generations of Nvidia graphics cards are here. As with the past generations, the Blackwell contingent contains cheaper models with eight gigabytes of video memory (VRAM), such as the Geforce RTX 5060. However, this causes displeasure in the gaming community, since many players are convinced that eight gigabytes are no longer sufficient in 2025.
But not only Nvidia offers corresponding cards. AMD presented its new Radeon RX 9060 XT in two variants this week: a version with 16 GB for $ 349 (about 308 euros) and one with eight gigabytes for $ 264). Despite the option with more memory, AMD is now also faced with similar criticism as competitor Nvidia.
AMD with a clear opinion
Frank Azor, AMD’s head of gaming products, has on x Now commented on the criticism and represent a clear opinion. He emphasizes that the majority of the players still played in 1080p (Full HD) and did not need eight gigabytes of VRAM. “The majority of gamers are still playing in 1080p and has no need for more than 8 GB of memory.
The most played games worldwide are mostly e-sports titles,” writes Azor in his post. In fact, current Steam statistics show that 55.27 percent of all users play in 1080p, followed by 1440p with 19.90 percent. The majority of the players actually use resolutions in which eight gigabytes of memory can be a valid option.
Compromise necessary
In some demanding games such as Doom Eternal, Cyberpunk 2077 or Starfield, there should also be restrictions in 1080p if graphic details are set at maximum. Then players with 8 GB cards probably have to reduce the texture quality or other memory-efficient settings in order to achieve a liquid gaming experience.
Experts indicate that the difference between “ultra” and “high” settings in many games is hardly recognizable with the naked eye, but often needs significantly less VRAM. However, the decision for a 16 GB GPU could be worthwhile for players who want to use their graphics card for several years, since the storage requirement in future games is expected to continue to increase.
An old dispute
The discussion about the “right” scope of video memory is not new. There were similar debates in previous generations, showing that the memory requirements rose more slowly than forecast many experts. Nevertheless, the question remains whether AMD and NVIDIA are too economical to deal with the VRAM in their entry models or whether the criticism is exaggerated. Ultimately, users have to decide for themselves which offer is the right one for them.
As long as there are identical graphics card versions with a larger memory, it is difficult to argue against a cheaper variant with less VRAM. The price difference in the two versions of the RX 9060 XT is around 17 percent.
