ARM-based system to become more common by 2026

As per a new report, ARM-based systems are expected to become more common in the near future. They could storm the marketplace at an unprecedented rate.

ARM’s system-on-a-chip (SoC) can be found in various devices. These devices include Apple M-series chips, Chromebooks, and other devices. Given the new findings of the recent report can we expect a rise in the acquisition of these devices?

DigiTimes published market research from Canalys. The research report predicts that by 2026, ARM will hold a major market share compared to its competitors. As per the estimate, 30% of PCs will be ARM-based. Where half of the CPUs utilized for cloud services will be dependent on ARM architecture. Steve Brazier, CEO of Canalys, added that this event is going to be extraordinary. And this is just about to happen within the next four years. He regarded this happening as capable of changing the industry.

As of now, ARM holds a small market share. But a steady rise can be noticed given that Apple choose its own ARM-based silicon. Where Intel was left behind by Apple. The Dean McCarron of Mercury Research mentioned Tom’s Hardware, that ARM’s current market share is limited. It is around 13.1% of PC client processors. This implies data from the third quarter of 2022.

Now the question arises that whether this leap is possible or not. Since 2022 is just going to end. Given this ARM is left with only three more years to boost its market share by 17%. However, ARM’s share will continue to increase given its usability in Macs as well as Chromebooks, even if we consider that ARM could not succeed in gaining its goal.

Brazier believes that ARM could achieve the target if other manufacturers, such as HP or Asus invest in creating their own SoCs particularly based on ARM architecture. Though, the availability of other options like Intel and AMD seems a bit difficult. The development of ARM on Windows is also questionable. Where the expansion in the market could account for increased adoption despite the mass domination of Chromebooks and Macs.

In current times, ultralight, portable, and power-efficient notebooks are popular among users. The same goes for the ARM-based SoCs used in Macs. Given this, a position where ARM is an even stronger player could be a better place to be, with more power-efficient as well as robust PCs.
