Avatar: The Way of Water took more than a decade to make the film. James Cameron took a huge risk with it, since the production cost a lot of money. But the bet paid off, because now the 2 billion dollar mark has been cracked.
Cameron himself admitted at the start of the (under)water spectacle that Avatar: The Way of Water was probably “the worst business plan in film history”. The sequel to the 2009 megahit had to reach number three or four in the all-time rankings in order to even be in the black. So that was a damn risky bet – but it worked.
As reported by the Hollywood industry medium Deadline , Avatar 2 was able to reach the $2.024 billion mark yesterday, Sunday, and thus entered the exclusive $2 billion club. This makes The Way of Water the sixth highest-grossing film and will certainly reach number 4 soon.
Star Wars: The Force Awakens ($2.07 billion) and Avengers: Infinity War ($2.05 billion) are officially ahead of Avatar 2, but these two films should be overtaken this week. How far the sci-fi flick will go remains to be seen: Titanic is well within reach with worldwide box office earnings of $2.1 billion (not adjusted for inflation), so it’s possible that Avatar 2 will be in third all-time position lands.
However, the top 2 does not seem to be achievable: The first Avatar part came to 2.9 billion dollars, relatively close behind is Avengers: Endgame with 2.7 billion dollars. James Cameron is and remains the king of the film world: because with the Avatar sequel he is (soon) the first and of course the only director to have placed three films in the top 5 of the most successful films of all time.
