News for cyberpunk fans
Filming for the sci-fi series Blade Runner 2099 has officially concluded. The production, which took place in Prague and Belfast, marks a significant step for the iconic Blade Runner series as it is the first series to be shown on Prime Video. The focus of the plot is loud Collider Cora, played by Hunter Schafer, known from Euphoria. Cora is a woman who has been on the run all her life and is forced to constantly assume new identities.
In order to give her brother a secure future, she takes on a final identity. She forms an unexpected partnership with Olwen, a replicant who is facing the end of her life. This role will be played by Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh. The series continues the complex themes of its predecessors, at least one can hope so.
The question of the nature of humanity and the meaning of identity in a world in which the boundaries between humans and machines are blurring was already the focus of the first film, which was released in cinemas in 1982. Fans of the original can look forward to an expansion of the Blade Runner universe that offers both familiar elements and new perspectives.
Behind the scenes
Silka Luisa, known for “Shining Girls,” serves as showrunner and executive producer. Ridley Scott, director of the original 1982 Blade Runner, is also an executive producer. This combination promises to preserve the spirit of the original while introducing fresh ideas.
“Blade Runner 2099” marks a significant leap in time within the franchise. While the first film took place in 2019 and Blade Runner 2049 was set 30 years later, this series jumps 50 years into the future. This opens up numerous possibilities for technological and social developments in the Blade Runner world.
While no official launch date has been announced yet, Amazon Studios has announced the series as “coming soon to Prime Video.” So fans of the genre can look forward to a not-so-distant future where they can immerse themselves in the neon-lit streets and complex morality of Los Angeles in 2099. The Blade Runner series has had a significant impact on the science fiction genre since its debut in 1982.
The original film, based on Philip K. Dick’s novel “Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?”, set new standards in the cyberpunk genre with its dark vision of an overpopulated, polluted future. The 2017 sequel “Blade Runner 2049” expanded on this world and won two Oscars for its visual effects and cinematography.
