Since being taken over by Elon Musk, Twitter has offered a paid membership that includes a blue verification tick. Now Meta has jumped on the bandwagon and is providing a similar subscription for the social media platforms Facebook and Instagram.
This emerges from an announcement on Mark Zuckerberg’s broadcast channel (via Engadget ). The membership goes by the name of Meta Verified and in addition to the blue badge next to the name, gives subscribers enhanced protection against identity theft and direct access to customer support. Those who purchase Meta Verified can use the Services in connection with their Facebook and Instagram accounts.
Meta Verified costs $11.99 per month. The price is valid when the membership is taken out via the website. Anyone using an iOS device has to pay $14.99 per month. Initially, the subscription will only be available in Australia and New Zealand. However, more countries are to be added in the coming days and weeks.
The premium service Twitter Blue was only introduced in December. Elon Musk had enabled users of the short message service to purchase the blue verification tick, which was previously reserved for prominent accounts. Since apparently a not inconsiderable proportion of users have the wherewithal to spare for this, Meta seems to have developed a similar function in recent weeks. To subscribe to Meta Verified, the Facebook or Instagram account owner must be at least 18 years old. In addition, Meta must verify the profile using an ID card.
