Bluesky as a left-wing alternative to X? Not so fast, says the COO

In addition to the free Mastodon and the Instagram and thus meta offshoot Threads, Bluesky in particular is enjoying growing popularity due to the development of X/Twitter, which is no longer acceptable for many users. The management makes it clear: Bluesky is by no means “left-wing”.

COO denies portrayal as ‘left-wing app’

Just because you are not an echo chamber for reinforcing right-wing or ultra-conservative ideas or the mouthpiece of the wealthiest person in the world does not mean that Bluesky is politically left-wing. Something like this could be summarized what Rose Wang, Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Bluesky, recently told the US Economic Service Bloomberg tried to convey. Wang said it would be wrong to call Bluesky a “US-centric, left-leaning app.” Bluesky’s operations manager said in the interview that they don’t want to create an app for a single political perspective or just a single voice.

Instead, they want to appeal to a global audience, Wang continued. The perception that the newly created social network is seen as a kind of political alternative to X/Twitter will change over time as more users join. For the time being, Wang and her team at Bluesky are primarily concerned with offering users new functions. They said they want to introduce some kind of subscription model before the end of 2024.

Bluesky benefits above all from being able to offer a user experience that is very similar to X, while the atmosphere among visitors appears, at least so far, to be largely peaceful and respectful. Many users are currently moving away from X/Twitter after its owner Elon Musk made his closeness to returning US President Donald Trump more than clear.
