Bluesky Introduces Flashes, Its Take on an Instagram-Like Platform

Amid significant shifts in the social media industry, Bluesky is branching out with Flashes, a new app crafted to serve as an Instagram alternative. This development presents an option for users frustrated by Instagram’s recent changes, including an influx of AI-generated content and algorithm-driven suggestions.

Flashes is the creation of developer Sebastian Vogelsang, who built the app on Bluesky’s AT Protocol. This allows for seamless integration with Bluesky’s ecosystem—photos or videos shared on Flashes will also appear on the primary Bluesky app, and vice versa. Unlike Instagram, Flashes narrows its focus exclusively to visual content like photos and videos, removing text-based posts for a cleaner, more specific user experience.

Flashes will enable users to upload photo slideshows with up to four images or videos up to one minute long. Vogelsang clarifies that Flashes isn’t meant to be a full duplication of Instagram, explaining that its features will remain relatively simple, catering to those nostalgic for a less cluttered platform.

Bluesky’s steady growth is worth noting. The platform experienced a surge in popularity following Elon Musk’s controversial management of X (formerly Twitter). However, it still falls short of the massive user bases of giants like TikTok or Instagram, with an estimated 27 million active users. Despite the challenges of scaling, the company remains optimistic, bolstered by a $15 million investment round late last year. Plans to introduce paid subscriptions rather than rely on advertising or data collection further differentiate Bluesky from its competitors.
