Due to a mistake by Google, internet in Japan broke down for a few hours. Japan is the most technologically advanced nation, so not having the internet in the whole nation for certain time was drastic, to say the least.
The cause of the whole drama was Google. Accidently Google botched a Border Gateway Protocol (BGP)’. Due to this blunder, the banking, industrial, gaming, and transport sector of Japan were highly affected.
The issue lasted just for a small time but its effects lasted for many hours. The issue became so severe that Internal Affairs and Communications ministries of Japan had to get involved and find out the cause of it. The minister then gave a detailed explanation which was that “Google accidentally became a transit provider for Jastel by announcing peer prefixes to Verizon. Since Verizon would select this path to Jastel it would have sent traffic to this network towards Google. Not only did this happen for Jastel, but thousands of other networks as well.”
Engadget reported that the mistake made by Google made it look as if a huge amount of IP addresses were accessible for internet traffic to be routed through Google. Though the actual situation was that those IP addresses were internet service providers of Japan. Therefore a lot of internet traffic was sent to Google instead of Japan by the main service providers. As Google is not a service provider nor does it control traffic so in short, all traffic meant for Japan was sent nowhere.
Google did take full responsibility of internet breakdown and apologized by saying “We set wrong information for the network and, as a result, problems occurred. We apologize for causing inconvenience and anxieties.”
