Break with tradition? New Apple Watch should exclude old bracelets

A possible reboot for the design of the Apple Watch is currently causing discussion – and could have unexpected consequences for many users. According to current leaks, Apple is planning a fundamental overhaul of its smartwatch for 2027.

New mechanism for bracelets

The focus is apparently also on a technical change that could have a deep impact on the existing accessories ecosystem. How out According to reports via Bloomberg Apple is working on a completely new attachment system for the bracelets. Instead of the insertion mechanism that has been established since 2015, an alternative solution could be used in the future, which was most recently described as magnetic.

Apparently this isn’t just for cosmetic reasons. Industry observers suspect that Apple wants to create additional space in the case through the change. This could be used for a larger battery, which is something many users have been wanting for years.

Compatibility is at stake

What makes the whole thing a bit tricky is the possible consequences for bracelets. Since the first Apple Watch in 2014, Apple has relied on a largely unchanged system that has enabled high compatibility across generations. This has created a huge market for original and third-party bracelets. If Apple actually switches to a new system, these accessories could no longer be usable in the future. For many users who have invested in high-quality bracelets over the years, this would be a significant change.

Strategic timing

The possible time frame at least fits into Apple’s previous product cycles. Major design changes to the Apple Watch traditionally occur at intervals of several years. A comprehensive redesign in the context of the generation expected for 2027 therefore seems plausible. As with many Apple rumors, caution is advised here. Similar reports about a redesign have been circulating for several years.
